Millenial-aged organic carbon subsidies to a modern river food web

چکیده
Recent studies indicate that highly aged material is a major component of organic matter transported by most rivers. However, few studies have used natural C to trace the potential entry of this aged material into modern river food webs. Here we use natural abundance C, C, and deuterium (H) to trace the contribution of aged and contemporary organic matter to an important group of consumers, crustacean zooplankton, in a large temperate river (the Hudson River, New York, USA). Zooplankton were highly C depleted (mean DC 1⁄4 240%) compared to modern primary production in the river or its watershed (DC 1⁄4 60% to þ50%). In order to account for the observed C depletion, zooplankton must be subsidized by highly aged particulate organic carbon. IsoSource modeling suggests that the range of the aged dietary subsidy is between ;57%, if the aged organic matter source was produced 3400 years ago, and ;21%, if the organic carbon used is 50 000 years in age, including fossil material that is millions of years in age. The magnitude of this aged carbon subsidy to river zooplankton suggests that modern river food webs may in some cases be buffered from the limitations set by present-day primary production.

Millennial-aged organic carbon subsidies to a modern river food web.
Recent studies indicate that highly aged material is a major component of organic matter transported by most rivers. However, few studies have used natural 14C to trace the potential entry of this aged material into modern river food webs. Here we use natural abundance 14C, 13C, and deuterium (2H) to trace the contribution of aged and contemporary organic matter to an important group of consume...
متن کاملDifferential support of lake food webs by three types of terrestrial organic carbon.
Organic carbon inputs from outside of ecosystem boundaries potentially subsidize recipient food webs. Four whole-lake additions of dissolved inorganic 13C were made to reveal the pathways of subsidies to lakes from terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (t-DOC), terrestrial particulate organic carbon (t-POC) and terrestrial prey items. Terrestrial DOC, the largest input, was a major subsidy of pe...

Historically, terrestrial food web theory has been compartmentalized into interactions among aboveground or belowground communities. In this study we took a more synthetic approach to understanding food web interactions by simultaneously examining four trophic levels and investigating how nutrient (nitrogen and carbon) and detrital subsidies impact the ability of the belowground microbial commu...
متن کاملDynamic stability in dry season food webs within tropical floodplain rivers
Debate exists about the effects of hydrological variation on food web dynamics and the relative importance of different sources of organic carbon fuelling food webs in floodplain rivers. Stable carbon isotope analyses and ecological stoichiometry were used to determine the basal sources in dry season macroinvertebrate food webs in two floodplain river systems of Australia’s wet-dry tropics that...
متن کاملEvidence supporting the importance of terrestrial carbon in a large-river food web.
Algal carbon has been increasingly recognized as the primary carbon source supporting large-river food webs; however, many of the studies that support this contention have focused on lotic main channels during low-flow periods. The flow variability and habitat-heterogeneity characteristic of these systems has the potential to significantly influence food web structure and must be integrated int...
